Our Ancestors
Muslim dynasty which dominated North Africa and Spain, the Almoravids (Arabic etymology: al-mūrabiṭūn) originate from a group of Saharan Berber tribes who nomadized between Senegal and southern Morocco, the Lamtūna and the Juddala. (Year 1040-1465).
Heading north, from Sakia Al Hamra to Hidjeb
The real framework of Kabyle Islam took shape with the maraboutic movement at the beginning of the 16th century. Before this date, Kabylia did not present a particular religious configuration and was apparently not distinguished from the overall North African religious context. Maraboutism is a movement of social Islamization which, for the first time, involved men, ideas and new practices combining Islamic dogma and the local social environment. Amrabeḍ is the Berberized form of dialectal Arabic mrâbeṭ which is itself a dialectalized form of the classical Arabic term al-murâbiṭ from which the word Almoravid comes; rabaṭa, “to attach” in Arabic, refers to the “attachment” of the Berbers to their identity and to their land in its defense against the Spanish-Portuguese reconquista and it is naturally in Islam that they sought and found the framework of their resistance to the Christian push.
The First BENHIDJEB
Our ancestor, Djedy (Grand Father) Moussa settled in Hidjeb, probably 17, 18 century. No exact information on his arrival in Kabylia. What we know, a scholar of Islam. When he died, a tomb was erected, which over the years became a mausoleum, a holy place that the villagers still visit today. Practice not recognized by traditional Islam. Below his tomb in Hidjeb.
